Be the example parent

June 29, 2011 - Amy Leigh Wilson
My baby turns 12 this month. Yikes! You know how people say that when you're dying, you can see your life flash before your eyes? Well, it seems that every July, I see his life flash through mind. As I think about how much he has changed in the last year – he went off to middle school and grew taller than me, among other things – I find myself still seeing his baby traits. His smile now still reminds me of the goofy baby grins I used to get. He still has very little patience for tedious tasks (yes, he takes after me). He's still cautious moving into new situations (me again). While I miss those baby days on occasion, I have to admit that I love this age. Not quite a boy and not yet a man, he still needs cuddling and tucked in every night, as long as I don't share “I love you” in front of his friends. Raising him so far has been an amazing journey and I am blessed to see him change in front of my eyes. Happy birthday, my son. I love you more than words can ever express. This month's issue takes a look at discipline. Check out the article by Michele Ranard inside to see if you can tweak your style to help your kids. I know, like me, you come in contact with some children and think, “Don't their parents teach them anything?” Keep learning to make sure your kids are the ones praised instead of judged. God bless America and our troops everywhere as we celebrate Independence Day!
