Springtime Brings Changes

March 22, 2013 - Amy Leigh Wilson
Another new season is upon us — at least this one gives us sunshine. Spring is all about new life and my life is certainly changing this year. In May, my daughter will be getting her driver’s permit. While this is a momentous occasion for her, of course, it also signifies great change for me. More worries about her safety, more lessons I?have to teach, more mistakes she has to make on her own. All this and more will be part of the next six months (and years). Last month, six teenagers in Warren lost their lives in a car accident. My heart aches for those families, and for their two friends who survived. Those kids made a mistake that can’t be fixed. National media descended on Trumbull County and Internet posts speculated about their home lives, their friends and their choices. Adolescence is the place we learn, where we take small steps into the world and hope for the best. As parents, we hope that we’ve taught them enough to safely make their way into the world. Facing serious consequences as a teenager is scary; facing them as a parent is terrifying. No one who values family is spared the heartache when any child is lost. Let’s all pray for those Warren families and classmates to find peace and a fresh start. Remember all your own mistakes and have an open heart as our kids learn to navigate the world. Whether it’s their first steps or their first time behind the wheel, we all have to embrace the changes in life.
