School Daze Coming Fast

August 1, 2012 - Amy Leigh Wilson
Summer is almost over. Wow, that went fast. But this is the month we start shopping for jeans, school supplies and the coolest lunch boxes. It's fun to start a new chapter with the kids and I always enjoyed the anxious days just before school started. Then I loved that first day when my kids came home loaded with stories about new teachers and friends. It was always such an adventure. My kids are totally different in the way they approach the start of school. My daughter, the adventurer, is all excitement. She's busy picking out her outfit, talking about all the new things she'll get to do and thoroughly exuberant about the idea of meeting new friends. She comes home and regales me with stories this boy's antics in the hallway and that girl's adorable new purse. And then there's my son. “Want new school supplies?” “Nope.” “New clothes?” “Nah, I'm fine.” “Excited about your classes?” “Not really.” He's a great student and he's fine once he's actually in school, but in the days leading up to it, he just wants to play video games and not think about it. At the end of the first day, I might get a funny story if I'm lucky. Everything else was “OK.” Enjoy the last days of summer and the adventure of back to school — especially if you're going through it for the first time. Teachers are special and wonderful people. Help them out if you can. I hope your kids come home bursting with stories to tell.
